Artist Statement
Still life has been the departure point for the majority of my work for the past 40 years. I have collected many objects that have meaning to me, or strike me with their graphic elements. When I set up a still life I explore the idea of how two dimensional and three dimensional objects relate to each other in space.
Painting requires rigorous surface coherence and interpenetration of movement, shape, and color. The relationship of the parts informs the meaning of the whole. In painting, as in my earlier work in collage, I aspire to have the separate objects become bridges to the things around them.
In recent years I have become compelled to rework some of my older paintings to bring them to a further level of completion, regarding color and structure.
